A lot of video games have become quite popular, therefore amassing a lot of fans in the process. One very popular game in the years’ past is Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic the Hedgehog games are usually 2D in graphics and it is a platformer with a distinct type of gameplay.
Since then, a lot of fans tried replicating Sonic the Hedgehog and made their own iterations of the famed franchise.
Today, we are going to talk about a game that takes on a grassroots approach. What I mean by this is this game was supposedly a fan-made game based on the popular Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. I am referring to the Freedom Planet for the Wii U.
As mentioned earlier, Freedom Planet took a grassroots approach because the creator of the game, Stephen DiDuro, wanted a game that resembles the popular Sonic the Hedgehog. During the course of making this game, he thought of creating this game as a standalone game and not just a derivative of the famous game title.
Stephen Diduro went to DeviantArt, a website full of amazing artists and hired Ziyo Ling. Ling was the creative designer for the game and she replaced all of the Sonic the Hedgehog characters and made new and unique ones instead.
The story of the game is about two main characters: Sash Lilac and Carol Tea. Both of these characters are anthropomorphic which means they have innate human emotions like sadness, happiness, and anger. Lilac is a dragon and Tea is a wildcat.
They were to get this powerful relic called the Kingdom stone. But, the path to getting there will not be easy as three warring nations will be in their way before they can get hands on the all-powerful Kingdom stone.
Freedom Planet for the Nintendo Wii has the same game dynamic to that of the original Sonic the Hedgehog franchise that was released during the Sega Genesis era. But, of course, there are new elements added to the mix since this is not just a mere fan-made game; it is one made with pride and joy.
Both Lilac and Tea have special unique abilities. Lilac, for example, can perform a double jump which allows her to go to extremely high places that you normally wouldn’t reach without the double jump ability. She also has the ability to do an air dash which allows her to bounce off walls and also reach far-flung areas.
Tea can do a spin attack by curling herself into a ball. She needs to run in order to perform this move because the momentum is key.
There are two basic game modes to choose from: Adventure and Classic. Adventure mode is basically a story mode feature which allows you to uncover the mysteries of the game. Classic mode, on the other hand, allows you to play an entirely different set of levels and there are no available story cutscenes; just pure fun!
Freedom Planet is a great game if you want to play an action platformer much like Sonic the Hedgehog of years past. Freedom Planet is available for the Nintendo Wii U.
